THE BEGINNING IS BEGINNENING SOON… I HOPE

As long-term readers know, my family and I are preparing to set off on a year-long adventure living on the road. My husband is building the interior of a 20-foot camper, which we will pull behind a van with a tow package, and bring our SUV for good measure. These vehicles will be our home base as we adventure around America with three small children and two dogs.

This process has been a long time coming, and we have hit many unexpected roadblocks, but we are getting closer every day.

This last week, we got to spend our first several nights sleeping in the camper.

This was an unbelievably welcome relief. A short heat wave in my area turned into what we are now calling a heat tsunami, and our house air conditioner simply can’t keep up.

The camper, however, is extremely well insulated and has enough air conditioning and solar power fed into it that it basically turns into a refrigerator. So, for those few nights with all of us in our own bunk beds, we were sleeping like a king, a queen, and tiny princes and princesses. The kids were absolutely delighted.

Now we are back inside for a short period of time while the finishing touches are completed in the camper interior, small things like edging the floors and patching a few square inches of insulation. We have also begun to definitively move out of individual rooms of our house. We have things to go isolated and are now moving room by room, fully emptying the space, never to be filled again.

After all this time, it is incredibly satisfying to feel these big milestones towards finally hitting the road and launching on this great big adventure.
